I enjoyed this story which surprises me since I typically prefer contemporary romance. It was interesting to read about the differences between then and now, and I think the thing I liked most was the overwhelming respect the young people had for the adults. Don't misunderstand me, you can see that respect now days, but not to the extent I read in this story. The romance parts of the story got a little tiresome to keep up with, especially where Faith was concerned. She did love Collin, but for various different reasons, she kept trying to get him out of her head and heart by attempting to fall in love with other men. I definitely did not like Charity. She was too mean-spirited and self-centered for my taste. My only other comment/question concerns references to God. I've always thought that when referring to God, that whatever word you used should be capitalized - like Him, He, etc. They weren't capitalized in this book unless it was at the beginning of a sentence....it just seemed odd to me.

I finished this last night. Late last night, having begun it the day before. After discovering Julie Lessman's work, I am seriously questioning myself if I will ever get some deep cleaning done, or even necessary housework. I am going to have to purchase audio books and rig them up in our home speaker system, out of sheer desperation. Because once I start, I cannot put her books down. I find myself going through life experiences, or being contacted by someone reaching out, and I prayerfully deal with it, with hope and love, then I go back to reading Julie's book, and earily, I am reading prayers or sequences of something similar. And these God-incedences are all ther reason I need to keep on reading.... I pray the prayers, even changing names and situations to make them more personal, because these are REAL prayers that, when prayed sincerely, REALLY bond our souls with God, and increase the hope in our hearts, and our love for God, who is ALL GOOD and worthy of ALL of our love.
I finished this book, and for the most part I enjoyed it. However, it does not merit a rating higher than a 3 star in my opinion. Here is my take

THE GOOD

*The writing is fantastic. Things flow nicely, the plot moves steadily, and it keeps you interested.

*Scripture is used adeptly to instruct characters. It really excels at explaining how making a relationship work requires both partners to lean on God. And, I liked how the main character was pushed to a point in her trials when she questioned her reliance on God. I think it is realistic to show that Christians have their moments of doubt.

*The historical setting in WW1 era Boston and Ireland is interesting, though I would have liked a little more description of Ireland.

THE BAD

*The love triangles get obnoxious.

*I didn't like how the characters have this notion that you fall in love with someone pretty instantly, and you continue to love them not matter what. In REAL life, if someone breaks your engagement, cheats on you, or whatever you get heartbroken yet you eventually move on and fall in love with someone else without pining for your lost love. And who with any intelligence would pine for the high school crush for so long? For crying out loud, there are other men in the sea. I think it does a terrible disservice to young singles to paint true love as something you find with one person only. I wouldn't recommend this book to my daughter for this reason, or at least give her a heads up that this situation isn't realistic. I would rather have a great Christian romance that shows heartbreak, coming to Jesus for healing, and then moving on to someone who cherishes you while the person who broke your heart ends up with someone better suited for him/her.

*The sister Charity was so awful I wanted to strangle her through the kindle. Was she ever disciplined for being so nasty and, frankly, wicked?

*I don't want to spoil the plot, but it did seem to resolve so most people were happy. In real life, you lean on God and are happy not because you get the results you want but because God carries you through the tough times. Even the most faithful can die in war, lose their house, remain single far too long, etc.

Overall, it was fun to read, but I'm glad it was free. I wont' be reading the sequels.
So I wrote a review for this book awhile ago but I waited to long after reading the book and I really don't like it! It in no way gave my full feelings for this book so after rereading it I'm going to give a second try!
Words cannot fully express my love for this book! Several times I would just stop reading to hug the book and give a happy sigh-yeah I'm a bit ridiculous! This book gives you the full spectrum of emotion. I laughed out loud several times and other times tears made it hard to read. Julie Lessman is one of those amazing authors that can make you happy to be sad and it is a true gift. And knowing what was coming didn't help any in lessening the emotions in fact since I read the prequel I think it was even harder!
Faith is an amazing heroine! Her relationship with God was so close and real; it was truly inspiring! I also was insanely impressed with how she kept God as her priority and refused to be with anyone who didn't love Him as much as she did!
Collin is not that admirable of a hero to begin with but as his love for Faith draws him closer to God he begins to turn into a man you really like. And when he finally gives his heart to God he becomes one of your favorite heroes!
Patrick and Marcy's relationship was made even more special after reading A Light in the Window which is the story of when they fell in love! I love how even after over twenty years their love has not dimmed but instead has grown!
In short I once again loved all the characters with the exception of Charity but knowing how much I ended up loving her in the other books made her much more bearable in this one! I love the O'Conner family dynamic and each of them endeared themselves to my heart. The other characters were pretty awesome as well from Mrs. Gerson to Mitch, and Faith's friends at both The Herald and the Irish Times.
So now that I've rambled for awhile I will end by saying I adored this book and it is truly one of my absolute favorite books!
