He'd see seen them in the scope of his M-16 Ravagers, surging through the snow drifts along the rural Texas highway.

For 11 years without summer, Meteorologist and Forager John Snowden has fought the Ice Line, the leading edge of climate apocalypse that has buried the country in snow from Chicago to Dallas.

Now, he has one goal survive the next 50 miles.

But then he hears the sound that will change his destiny the terrified, high-pitched scream of a woman in danger.

It's 2037. It's Solar Cycle 26, and Winter is Here!

Cycle 26 Winter is Here eBook Joe Dacy

In Cycle 26: Winter Is Here, author Joe Dacy II presents an apocryphal view of humankind’s future when the earth experiences a new Ice Age. In the United States, the ice line extends as far south as Texas, leaving millions dead, dying, or homeless. The story is told from the viewpoint of two protagonists: meteorologist John Snowden as he attempts to solve the mystery behind the advancing ice sheet; and nurse Amy Callahan as she flees the freezing menace.

Unlike the movie, Day After Tomorrow, based on novelist Whitney Strieber's non-fiction book on the potential for a new Ice Age, Cycle 26 does not necessary blame global warming for the catastrophe. Instead, Dacy suggests the climate change may be caused by solar activity, which many scientists believe may have created ancient ice ages.

Also unlike the plot of Day After Tomorrow, which took place in a relatively short span of time, Cycle 26 is a saga detailing the years of research and debate over what induced the change in weather patterns and how, despite years of warning, society was unprepared to deal with the impending disaster.

Some may feel Dacy's narrative slows in spots as he explains the science of climate change; on the other hand, others may find the science fascinating. For me, an experienced disaster responder, the author's long-term look at the phenomena and its consequences rang frighteningly true.

Cycle 26 Winter is Here eBook Joe Dacy Reviews

Cycle 26 Winter is Here, by Joe Dacy, is so topical and so full of relevant climatic discussion that it almost does not read as science fiction. The author fills the pages with charts, graphs and Google Earth views of relevant locations, reinforcing his detailed explanations and colorful descriptions. The story spans a sixty year period from the birth of the main character through what, for him is the present day. We follow the lives of John Patrick Snowden and Amy Callahan as they live through what is initially believed to be an ice age brought on by man made increasing levels of CO2. John, a climatologist, searches for the reason an ice age that is quickly moving south, causing untold disruption and death. At first, this reads as counter intuitive since all we read about today is global warming, the melting of polar ice and rising sea levels. The author links real current and historical climate data as well as solar activity and the cycle of the earth's movement in a way that makes the story completely believable. He goes much further, showing us what our future might be like using more charts, graphs, and believable discussions. Ultimately, the paths of the two main characters cross as they are forced together in a fight against the less fortunate survivors of the apocalypse. There was not a dull moment in all of the 338 pages. The story is fast moving and very hard to put down. I found it thoroughly enjoyable and completely believable. The author, very nicely, ties everything together at the end of the story, giving us all hope for a brighter future. Cycle 26 is easy to recommend to lovers of science fiction and perhaps those concerned about the cause and effect of man pumping tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
Great adventure story of a world in a new ice age. What would happen if a sheet of ice enveloped the US? Who would survive? And how? What would separate the civil from the savage when no food is around? An apocalyptic thriller from beginning to end.
Plausible fiction woven into credible climate science. Product placements that would please a screenwriter bent on a sales campaign paired with the movie. A quadruple thread of parallel life experiences. Thankfully it has a logical convergence.
Read carefully.....this is our future. The Maunder Minimum is about to start, and life as we know it will be changed forever. I want to thank the author for packing so much valuable information in such a tight and gripping story. Almost impossible to put down, and yet, I didn't want the story to end, because is is so well written.
"Cycle 26" is a terrific science fiction thriller from Joe Dacy depicting a world in which a new ice age threatens the United States with an ever-encroaching wall of ice and snow bearing down on Texas. I'm not typically a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction but this novel hooked me by covering the entirety of its character's lives from birth to old age in this chilling world, from heartbreak and tragedy to glimmers of hope. The book is mostly set in rural West Texas, a setting I know little about and so it was an interesting learning experience. Each chapter has maps and charts for reference, which was handy for some of the more "hard-science" aspects and locales I was unfamiliar with (such as the aforementioned West Texas hill country).

A solid recommend of an easy read - I read it in the course of one evening, literally not putting it down.
