I've been to the circus and rode this elephant for 20-25 yrs, so I was very interested in reading this book. The amusing anecdotes were entertainment enough, but what really struck me was how he outlined the keys to success in that business.
In telling his stories, he woven in the HOW he managed to progress from bar-bands to arena tours and most importantly- keep working. Valuable instruction on the less tangible elements in "making it". Work hard, do quality work, keep your mouth shut and ears/eyes open and don't fall into the "party" trap.
While the author isn't a Hemingway or Burrows, his writing is better than other books of this class. He explains what the things that non-crew wouldn't just know, but in a manner that doesn't bore the experienced veteran (who are just there for the deli-tray anyway).
I would recommend this book to those of us who "don't" anymore, those of us that "still do", and to a "youngster" just starting out. All three audiences can come away with something from his stories and observations.
And besides, if enough of you buy the book- in his "old age", the author might not have to hold it until the driver stops for fuel anymore.

We Are the Road Crew Vol 1 Ken Barr 9781450538671 Books Reviews
Ken Barr's book is an interesting behind-the-scenes look at what goes on before, during, and after a big rock show. He shares anecdotes of his life on tour with several big bands. I felt a bit of nostalgia as I had been to a couple of those performances, and his description brought me back to those times.
Ken has seen a lot during his years on the road, but he respects the bandmembers' privacy and divulges very little about there personal lives or quirks. The book is not a tell-all, which I think is pretty classy for this day & age. I read it from e-cover to e-cover in less than three days, so it definitely kept my attention!
An interesting look into the real life of roadies. It held my interest all the way through but read like a "What I Did Last Summer" essay. Ken Barr seems like a real nice fellow, but he's no writer.
This has some great anecdotes, and the experiences of the author are great, but the writing is rough. Would have benefited a lot from a co-author or a ghost-writer interviewing the author about the experiences. Still interesting, but a little hard to get through.
Without going into tecnical details, Ken manages to tell the story of what it's like being on the road crew as they travel the world. Like many others, I once dreamed of this lifestyle; thus, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the reality of what that was like. It feels like a very honest portrayal and moves along quickly.
For anyone who has ever attended a concert and wondered exactly what it took to bring it all together on stage, this book is a must-read. I really enjoyed reading about the behind-the-scenes escapades, which in some ways can be more interesting than the "show" itself. This was an enjoyable account of the life of a "roadie", who obviously loved every minute of being part of the crew. The author also offers us an off-stage glimpse of some of the "entertainment professionals" that we almost never get to see. For all these reasons and more I can recommend "We Are The Road Crew" for an interesting read.
Was an interesting view of a roadie though the author seems too happy and go lucky... I bet he was a great person to work with... Would have liked a little more detail about some of the stuff he did... Book was easy to read and I liked how he worded things - not too stuffy, basically a "this is how I talk" kind of book...
“We Are the Road Crew” is one of my favorite books. And I read a lot of books. I downloaded it to my and read right through it, then read it again. And I don’t listen to KISS or Alice Cooper or Stone Temple Pilots. Have never been to a rock concert. But this book is about so much more. It’s about teamwork and adventure, about problem solving and creativity, about loyalty and friendship, about doing what you love, about enjoying the trip. Ken took me backstage, onto the bus, to a whole lot of bars—all places I’ve never been before. The humor, the stories, the cast of characters, and the free-spiritedness of the book kept me reading. It’s not a tell-all book; it’s a from-the-heart book. Thanks, Ken.
