Minorou and Aboyeur are two champion racehorses sent from Britain to stud in Russia. A young man who leaves his village in England when the village trollop claims he's responsible for her pregnancy ends up looking after the two stallions. Then everything changes. Revolution turns life upside down and people flee across the vast country. The groom wants to look after a wealthy young woman who is attracted to him but has been prevented from showing it because of their social gap. As they ride Min and Boy to try to find safety, however, social differences disappear in the face of their difficulties. They want to get married but there is nobody left to marry them, so they just say that they are married and continue.
The end of the story where they practically trample desperate people to board a British ship is both wonderful and heartbreaking.
The tale is based on a true story and not surprisingly when the groom goes home years later to visit his parents, it turns out the trollop is married to a redheaded man and has all redheaded kids.
This book is really well worth reading but is not for children.
