It is a nice read with the author's imagination of life of the period and a good dash of romance.I have to say, though, I had expected to see more brutal, crude and extreme depiction of life fitting the time when man were yet to have any civilization. But the whole depiction of life here is rather tame and I would say the
characters' behaviour are extremely too civilized for the period. The romance is of the nature you find in any other historical romance novel.
The beginning of the book is quite engaging. It drags a lot in the middle with lengthy narrative of hunting, initiation and mating rituals (nothing graphic, though). Then it picks up towards the end.
All in all a good read.

Thought it would be more about cultures at that time rather than a love story with the"LoveStory"cliches.
This was an enjoyable read. Plot was expected, but laid out with a good deal of data. Conceivable tribes ,plot and ending. A good read for most ages
I only made it to page 29. I found the story line lacking context and depth of the characters. Limited information is given on the people and their surroundings. Actually, I found it rather boring.
I really enjoyed reading this on my . It's moves at a nice pace and can easily be finished within a week or a weekend for an avid reader.
After reading it, I bought the other books in the series, I didn't enjoy them as much. The timelines advance by a generation or two, so it's hard to figure out the relationship to the characters in this book. However, this would allow the books to be read out of order without losing the plot to the individual stories.
I plan on going back to reread these to see if maybe I just read them too fast in the first place.
I would recommend this as good reading.
I read this genre alot and was looking for another "series" to start. I thought I had found it with Ms Wolf. I did but I didn't. The first book was great! I loved the way she told the story of two tribes learning to live together, especially after the way the women were forced into the tribe. I was a little leery when it seemed to be going along the lines of male bad/ woman good especially since Alin (to me) was such a pampered spoiled "better than thou b!tch). But I was mistaken as I was to learn that Alin comes to see both tribes faults/weaknesses and their strenghts and the men learn that women are just as capable and strong as men. I enjoyed this book and bought the other 2 in the series but was disappointed to learn that the story isn't continued straight away but many ages/generations later. I will read them as I think Ms Wolf writes well, but if I had of known it wasn't a traditional series I might not have purchased it in the first place. I wanted to know how the combined tribe fared under the new leader and new traditions.
One of my all time favorite books. Read it for the first time when I was about 15, and have read it again too many times to count since then in the last 20 years. Love the time line setting, the love story, the different views of religion, the relationships between the two tribes and the dynamics of the individual relationships, just everything about it )
This is my 2nd time to read this series, in order and straight through and I sorry I''ve waited so long in some ways but in other ways I am so very glad. I'm sorry to have denied my self the joy of such a masterful writer for so long, but in an other way I am thrilled that with the huge number of books I read, some of the story has faded enough that I get that icy little tingle down my spine at a particularly delicious bit of writing. And Ms Wolf is very good at producing those " little bits "
The characters are well throught out and extremely well defined.
The research is very thorough and descriptions of the terrain, flora and fauna is amazing. I''ve heard fighting stallions scream and her description was so real I can still hear them ringing in my ears. And while I; and no other living person, has heard a mammoth trumpeted out a challenge or scream in fear and pain, I can almost hear them if I close my eyes and concentrate.
I look forward to the next two books and most sincerely recommend this great series to any one old enough to understand it.
