Beast Master's Quest (2006) is the sixth SF novel in the Beast Master series, following Beast Master's Circus. The initial work in this sequence is The Beast Master.

In the previous volume, Laris had signed a bond of indenture as Dedran's servant to get out of the refugee camp. Although she was underage at the time, Laris knew that Dedran could use his contacts in the Thieves Guild to counteract any legal complaints that she might pursue. Moreover, Dedran would certainly take Prauo away from her. Nonetheless, Laris risked all to try to help Storm and Tani.

In this novel, Hosteen Storm is a native of Terra, an Amerindian, a Galactic Commando, and a Beast Master with an unusual affinity with animals. He is bonded with Baku the eagle, Ho and Hing the meerkats, and Surra the dune cat, He is now married to Tani.

Tani is the niece of Brion and Kady Carraldo, who run an Ark. She is the daughter of a Beast Master who died with his whole team on Trastor. She is bonded with Minou and Ferrare the coyotes and is now married to Storm.

Brad Quade is Storm's stepfather. He married Storm's mother after the death of Storm's father.

Logan Quade is the son of Brad Quade and is Storm's stepbrother. He is infatuated with Laris.

Laris Trehannan is a young orphan from the refugee camps. She is very good with animals and has a special friend of her own, the cat-like Prauo. Laris found Prauo as a bedraggled kitten on the outskirts of the Lereyne spaceport.

Versha is the Patrol commander of the Arzor sector. She has known Brad for a long time and is impressed by Storm.

In this story, Laris is enjoying her stay on Arzor. She and Logan are chasing an old frawn bull when it decides to turn on them. Prauo warns Laris and she yells to Logan.

The bull turns before Logan can react and almost guts his horse. It rears and the frawn hooks the saddle girth. The girth breaks and the saddle slides off, taking Logan with it. He lies on the ground stunned for a while.

The bull lunges toward Logan, but Prauo intervenes. The bull snarls at Prauo and he snarls back. The bull decides to find a cooler place to rest.

Logan repairs the saddle temporarily and rides back to the ranch house with Laris. Nearing the house, he decides to race his friend. The run snaps the hasty repair and the saddle and Logan slide off again. He isn't really hurt, but is a little angry with himself for forgetting.

Logan tells Brad about the old bull as they enter the house. Brad and Tani also have news for Laris. Brad has traced her relatives and found that she is now the owner of a medium sized freight hauler. Tani has received information on a planet filled with large cats.

Laris is glad to learn about her family and even more interested in the possibility of finding Praou's home planet. She decides that they will use her starship to locate the home of her fur brother. Logan, Storm and Tani are also interested in searching for Praou's home.

Brad gets Versha involved. They start receiving more information from Tani's aunt and uncle. Brad has a friend on Trastor who learns more about the matter. And Versha gets some interesting news from Patrol headquarters.

This tale takes Laris and her friends into space looking for a planet that has never been officially registered. Laris likes the temporary captain of her starship and makes his title permanent. They also take several of the enhanced beasts with them.

During the voyage, Storm starts beast master training beast with Laris and Prauo. Both are able to communicate with enhanced animals. The link between the two of them, however, is much wider than links with the enhanced animals.

This is the last volume in this series. Yet other Norton series are available for anyone who enjoys this novel, including the Warlock,Janus, and Star Ka'at sequences and many more.

Highly recommended for Norton & McConchies fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of alien planets, beast talkers, and good friends. Read and enjoy!

Beast Master's Quest does not represent the high standards of
F the previous Beast master stories. It is worth reading as a sort of closure to the story line, but is in no way of sufficient quality to stand alone. Character development is very weak and the story line is very biased and self serving. Andre Norton would not be proud of this one.
The last book in the beast master adventures makes you not wanting to stop read. Had just the right amount of mystery and suspense.
In this one we actually got to see Preuo as an intelligent entity, although I think a little more information on the "bonding" between Laris and him could have been in order. This was a prime example of just how "alien" other species can be, and I applaud the writers for taking on the idea of culling less than perfect children. It's too bad the authors couldn't continue the series.
Great read! Read the Beast Master series from the beginning book, for pure adventure. Books for all ages. I first started this series in Jr High School and re-read every few years since. I am 63 and still enjoy it.
I love the characters in this series. You grow attached to each as they are introduced. I especially like the way they have the bonds between the animals and the people in this book they find ladies cats home world.where they get more questions and finally the answers I would recommend this series th anyone.
This is better than some of the other attempts I've read where someone else continues with someone else's characters and universe. Although Rocket Ships are becoming a little "long in the tooth", as it seems likely that if we survive to carry on to the stars reaction motors will not be the way we do it. As well is the perennial fallacy in our culture that PSI abilities have something to do with the materialist conception that "all is in the brain".
I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I especially appreciated the author's character development. But I could tell the Grand Master's touch was missing. Ms. Norton's characters were there in name only, in my opinion. It was, nevertheless, a gripping story

Still, Lyn McConchie is an excellent writer, and I hope to read more of her works.
