This is a well written book on the problems that faced the average Greek family during Hitler's occupation of Greece. The vivid description of the hunger and humiliation these people lived through is brought to life in this book. The determination to fight back against the Nazi's in spite of the occupation shows the character of this democratic country. So much is written about France, Italy and mainland Europe during this period, it was refreshing to read how devastating the war was on other areas. Excellent read for any WWII fan.Tags : Amazon.com: Apartment in Athens (New York Review Books Classics) (8601406036642): Glenway Wescott, David Leavitt, David Leavitt: Books,Glenway Wescott, David Leavitt, David Leavitt,Apartment in Athens (New York Review Books Classics),NYRB Classics,1590170814,Historical - General,Apartment houses,Athens (Greece),Germans - Greece,Germans;Greece;Fiction.,Greece - History - Occupation, 1941-1944,Greece;History;Occupation, 1941-1944;Fiction.,Psychological fiction,Triangles (Interpersonal relations),Triangles (Interpersonal relations);Fiction.,War stories,Classics,FICTION Classics,FICTION Historical General,FICTION Literary,FICTION Political,FICTION War & Military,Fiction,Fiction - General,Fiction-Coming of Age,FictionClassics,GENERAL,General Adult,Germans,Greece,Literary,LiteratureClassics,Literature: Classics,Psychological fiction,Triangles (Interpersonal relations),Triangles (Interpersonal relations);Fiction.,United States,WESCOTT, GLENWAY - PROSE & CRITICISM,War stories, war;historical;military;historical fiction books;historical fiction novels;alternate history;military fiction;military books;war books;historical fiction;fiction;politics;political books;novels;fiction books;historical novels;books fiction;books historical fiction;political;election;wwii;romance;world war ii;ww2;german;french;literary fiction;world war 2;classic;love;drama;translation;resistance;saga;world war two;world war i;art;spanish civil war;world war 1;adventure;friendship;family,wwii; historical fiction; historical; literary fiction; 20th century; world war 2; ww2; literary; war; german; german literature; contemporary fiction; soviet union; russian; world war 1; translation; drama; military; historical fiction books; historical fiction novels; military fiction; political books; fiction; politics; fiction books; military books; political; classic; world war ii; world war i; french; eastern europe; balkans; french literature; greek; alternate history; love; saga; russian literature; romanovs; historical books,Classics,FICTION Classics,FICTION Historical General,FICTION Literary,FICTION Political,FICTION War & Military,FictionClassics,Literary,Fiction - General,Germans,Greece,History,Occupation, 1941-1944,Triangles (Interpersonal relat,Wescott, Glenway - Prose & Criticism,Fiction,Literature: Classics

Whilst this story was extremely well written and I was intrigued by the premise of the novel I have to say that overall it wasn't an enjoyable read. There was an overpowering feel of opression and claustrophobia within this story, without any uplifting moments to alleviate the unrelenting grimness. I found it very difficult to appreciate the major characters here, and I found it difficult empathise with them.
What was most interesting to this reader was the insight into the German psyche. Whilst I could appreciate the author's skill in presenting the story I would find it difficult to recommend with any equanimity.
When I knew I would be visiting Athens, a friend recommended this book. As we drove around there, I couldn't help but think of what it must have been like during WW Two... when the story took place in this book. A small book, a good read.
wonderful little story about a particular family's experience of the greek occupation during wwII. none of the characters are very sympathetic, though all are intensely interesting. there's great psychology here and a really keen power of description, especially given that the characters really never leave the apartment.
The narrative of this book is entirely set in an apartment in Athens during the German occupation of in World War II. There is very little in the novel that brings out the character and feel of Athens. The plot has a slow build up, but it carries emotional punch by the end.
His 1945 APARTMENT IN ATHENS may lack the dazzling structurations of his recently rediscovered and greatly celebrated novella THE PILGRIM HAWK, but it is told with the same crystalline prose and is perhaps a deeper study of character. Mr. and Mrs. Helianos are a couple living in Nazi-occupied Athens forced to share their apartment with a melancholy German officer; vaguely mistreated by him, they learn to bear up under their hardships for a good year. Then he leaves for a vacation in Germany and returns behaving suddenly much more gently and kindly towards them, a change of heart that signals disaster for the lives of all of them. The story, inspired by an anecdote told by a Greek freedom fighter to Wescott, is perhaps not as dense as you'd like on first reading (there are none of the sort of Jamesian twists we might expect), but the difficult ethical positions of the Helianoses become clearer the more you think about the work later. This short novel is a very sophisticated study of the problems and evils inherent in human sympathy during a time of war.
This captures the brutality of the war as conducted by the Germans In a way that few others could. As more time passes from the war, current writers will be unable to express what it was like in the day-to-day lives of the occupied Greeks just as Corelli's Mandolin does so well. Now more than 70 years later, we are taken to a time and to events that we can scarcely imagine.
Westcott's story of a Greek family in Athens being forced to house, feed and serve a Nazi officer during World War II was, at one time, hailed as perhaps the greatest novel about the war to come out of the war. Unfortunately, both this novel and Glenway Westcott (who, inexplicably, stopped writing after the publication of "Apartment in Athens"), have been forgotten. The book is deliberate in its delivery, but never fails to engage, and shines a light on a much neglected chapter in this history of the Second World War -- the occupation of and subjugation of Greece by the Nazis.
